We’re just two weeks out from Halloween, which means it’s time to get serious about preparing your costume — especially if you and your lover are dressing up as a couple. After all, those costumes require time, effort, coordination and… occasionally, a fair amount of convincing.
Looking for some costume inspiration? Here’s some of our favorite pop culture-inspired costumes for couples. Stay tuned for next week, when we’ll round up some more classic couples costume ideas.
1. Walter White and Jesse Pinkman
Inspiration: Breaking Bad’s main men.
What you need: A yellow jumpsuit, something vaguely resembling a gas mask, and, if you’re dressing as Walter, a goatee and some glasses.
2. Margot and Richie Tenenbaum
Inspiration: The star-crossed lovers (and siblings) from The Royal Tenenbaums.
What you need: For Margot: Either a huge fur coat or a white colored short dress; a childish barrette; white gloves; a pin-straight blonde hairstyle; an endless supply of cigarettes. For Richie: A camel suit; a tennis windbreaker to wear underneath that suit; a sporty headband and wristbands; sunglasses; long, shaggy brown haircut.
3. Piper and Alex
Inspiration: Orange Is The New Black’s protagonist, Piper Chapman, and her former lover — with whom she hooks back up in prison.
What you need: For Piper: Tan scrubs; ugly black sneakers; a name badge; somewhat blondish hair. For Alex: Tan scrubs; ugly black sneakers; a name badge; black hair; glasses.
4. Daenerys + Viserys Targaryen
Inspiration: The exiled Targaryen siblings from Game of Thrones.
What you need: For Daenerys: Very long, very blonde hair; an old-timey (think summery Medieval) gown OR a leather crop top and long skirt. For Viserys: Shoulder-length white-blonde hair; an old-timey tunic and pants; a mean expression.
5. Olivia Pope + President Fitzgerald Grant
Inspiration: Scandal’s most infuriatingly indecisive couple.
What you need: For Olivia Pope: Classy pantsuit in earthtones; pearls. For President Grant: A suit; a little flag pin.
6. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney)
Inspiration: Gravity’s embattled astronauts
What you need: The best possible astronaut costume you can come up with, and a white bungee cord to tie you together.
7. Tris and Four
Inspiration: The butt-kicking teen couple from Veronica Roth’s dystopian Divergent series
What you need: Black outfits; some tattoo art; possibly some fake weaponry.
