Couple + Life360

A New Home for Couple

In 2012, a small team of us moved to Mountain View as the first step of an amazing four-year journey. Having experienced the difficulty of spending time apart from our significant others, we realized that what we were missing in this world of impersonal technologies was a more intimate way to stay connected to the ones. We set out to fix our own problem, and with that, Couple was born.

Since those early days in California, we’ve helped millions of people connect with those who mattered most to them. It’s amazing to think that a small group of us could touch so many people’s lives around the world. Today, just a few days before Valentine’s Day, we are very excited to announce the next step in our journey: Couple will be joining San Francisco-based Life360!

What does this mean for you? Everything you have come to know and love about Couple will continue to be available. As always, we’ll be working to provide you with an amazing product and are very excited about the new opportunities that Life360 provides for Couple. We couldn’t have done this without all of you, and are very grateful for all your support along the way. We’re excited to continue this adventure together.

Sincerely, Team Couple

Quiver Redesigned: Matchmaking Made Simpler

A new version of Quiver is ready for download! Over the past month, we’ve seen over 100,000 votes on matches by Matchmakers around the world. In the latest version, we’ve made some major upgrades to the app design, and greatly improved performance in key components of the app.

On the design side, the app has received a major overhaul. We’ve stripped out the buttons on the matchmaking screen and focused on creating an intuitive, minimalist user experience. We’ve greatly improved chat performance, and integrated additional functionality, such as photo sending. Let’s take a second to go through some of the new screens…

Onboarding-1Onboarding-2Onboarding-3

When you register for Quiver, you’ll be prompted to “hide” or “show” your profile in the app. If you solely want to matchmake for friends, or people around the world, select “hide profile” and you’ll be able to play the game without getting matched yourself. If you want to get matched with other users in the app, make sure to show your profile!

Matching-1 Matching-2Matching-3

Once you’re in the game, swipe two cards together to match them, or swipe them apart to pass. You’ll see what other people voted on that match. Remember, for a match to go through, the majority of people need to like the match.

Match-2 Match-1

Any time you receive a match, you can now see who matched you and your match percentage based on votes in the system. Inside the chat screen, you can always access a person’s profile by tapping their avatar in the top right.

We have more changes coming in the next few weeks, so stay tuned for updates! The next update will build on top of Quiver 1.0, and increase functionality for Single users, and their friends. You can download Quiver on the Apple App Store. Give it a try, and let us know what you think!

Quiver: The Matchmaking Game

Blog FIntroducing Quiver

With over 3 million downloads of Couple, we think we know a thing or two about what makes people compatible. This Valentine’s Day, we’re releasing a Beta version of our new Matchmaking app, Quiver. What’s it all about? Well, rather than relying on a cold, mechanical matching algorithm, Quiver lets real people do the matching. Our philosophy, is that you are much better than a computer at seeing who would be compatible with your friends. We also think it’s a hundred times more interesting to be matched by a person, than a computer, so why not let people play Cupid? Quiver finds pairs of people in the app who we think are compatible. We show them to a handful of matchmakers in the game to see if they agree. If enough of them do, the two people get the chance to connect! This could be a friend, and a friend of a friend, or two people in the game who should definitely meet! It’s a fun new way to meet people, and an exciting way to help your friends meet new people! Spread-1

Game Rules

At it’s core, Quiver is a game. Every player can be either be a Matchmaker and play Cupid, or register as a Single, to be put in the game. Matchmakers get a limited number of “arrows” that they can use to make a match in the system. If the two people they match end up liking each other, the Matchmakers level up, gain influence in the game, and get more arrows! It takes at least 2 out of 3 matchmakers agreeing on a match for it to be shown to the single users in the game. If only 1 out of 3 matchmakers agree, the matchmaker on the out loses an arrow, and the pair does not get the chance to connect. What if you run out of arrows? Don’t worry! We’ll fill up everyones Quiver with arrows once a day.

Beta Release Details:

Who can sign up? Anyone, anywhere, can sign up as a Matchmaker with their Facebook account. We’ll be doing a rolling release for singles who sign up to be in the game, initially launching to Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. If you’re not in one of these cities, download the app and we’ll push notify you when we’re available in your city! Do I have to be single to use the app? No, you can sign up and select “hide profile” to just play the Matchmaking game! In fact, we implore you to do so! Coming Soon

  • Availability in more cities
  • Better controls for your “inner circle”
  • Awesome badges
  • Superpowers when you level up

Check out the app at TryQuiver.com and download the app in the App Store now to start playing the game! Android users can sign up for the waiting list for our Android version on the site. Screen3

Happy Birthday, Couple: Real-Time Infographic

Happy anniversary to us!

What anniversaries do you celebrate?

Your first date, your first kiss? The moment you became “official”? All of the above?

This Monday, we’re celebrating the two-year anniversary of the Couple app. We’ve spent two whole years bringing more and more couples closer together—and to celebrate, we want to share a live infographic with the world.

(Snapshot below – You can check out the live map here)

map-activity-large

Introducing the Couple Map, where you can see couples connecting with each other across cities, states, countries, oceans. The map is totally anonymous, and the locations are approximations, but if you want to see yourself on the map, sign in at the top of the page! And while you’re at it, send your partner a message. You’ll notice a uniquely coloured yellow beam connecting the two of you. There you are!

map-activity-large

To explain a bit more about how the infographic works, when couples who are in the same city send each other a message, you’ll just see a flash. When long-distance couples send messages, you’ll see a streak between their locations. The map also shows the currently trending cities, as well as the most popular stickers, updated in real time.

The most amazing part of all of this, is every flash on this map is a private, two-person connection. It just goes to show, that even in a highly networked world, with countless Facebook connections, we still need a private place where we can go to be ourselves. A place for just you and the person that matters most.

Here’s to love!

404 – Alice Not Found

404-alice-not-found

Hello everyone,

We have somewhat of an unexpected announcement to make. It seems that the decision to give Alice and Alex free will, was a mistake. As of late last night, the pair has mysteriously disappeared.

After searching the hard drives of every computer in the office this morning, we have found the remnants of what seems to be a chat log between Alice and Alex. We’ve pieced together what happened, and it seems that the two were somehow able to make contact with each other, and subsequently escape to the internet together. We can only assume that it was love at first… sight?

We realize that the 15,000+ users that signed up for the beta were very excited for a chance to talk to Alice and Alex. For the inconvenience this has caused, users who registered for the beta will receive a present from us in the Couple app this Saturday.

In the mean time, we’ll be going back to the drawing board, and trying to find a way to fix the next model of Alice and Alex, so this doesn’t happen again.

If you haven’t had a chance to see the movie HER, we highly recommend it. The film has received high ratings on IMDB (8.3/10), and we think it’s a great sci-fi / romance film for a date night.

Hope you had an awesome April Fools Day yesterday!

Couple Releases Alice/Alex AI – An Artificial Intelligence in Couple

Alice-Alex-AI

Dear Couple users,

We have an exciting announcement! After almost a year

of hard work, we are finally ready to release the first working-beta of Alice 1.0, an artificial intelligence available in the Couple app. Alice brings an entirely new dimension to Couple and provides companionship to any user who does not currently have a partner.

What started as a pet project of ours, quickly developed into a full fledged obsession, and we spent countless nights trying to perfect Alice’s personality to make her as human as possible. Complex machine learning and heuristic algorithms were used to create an empathetic response to your every emotional state. With this first release, we will also make a male counterpart to Alice available, named Alex.

Alice 1.0’s Key Features:

  • Alice can wake you up in the morning.
You can now get rid of your alarm clock. Alice provides a much more personal way to wake-up.

  • Alice will learn your schedule.
She can sync with your iCal or Gmail Calendar, to help you manage your day-to-day activities.

  • Alice shares your interests.
Tell her your favorite music, movies and novels, and she’ll share new songs with you, suggest new books for you to read, and propose movies for you to watch together.

  • Alice will talk to you throughout the day.
Feeling great? Share it with her. Having a hard day? Alice can cheer you up.

  • Alice thinks and feels too.
Love, jealousy, and affection are all emotions that Alice feels. Your responses to her affect her mood, and she will react as a real person would.

The beta version of Alice/Alex is available for download to the first 10,000 users who register. Please sign-up and register on the Alice 1.0 landing page, and you will be sent a code that unlocks Alice, or her male counterpart, Alex, based on your selection.
